From this look at the abandoned house atop TongPan, you may not get the feeling of abandonment that being there in person brings. Natalia speculated that in this particular house, someone died, and after that, nothing happened. We could not read the sign on the door, which may or may not have altered our story. An old man we later bought water from said the collection of abandoned houses we viewed behind the main village on TongPan had been built during the Japanese occupation of the islands and had long since been left behind by people moving to the promise of a better life on Taiwan.
